17th UKCEN Annual Conference, 14/06/17, Family Matters

The 2017 UKCEN Annual Conference will take place on Wednesday 14th June at the Liverpool Medical Institution, in the heart of Liverpool’s architecturally impressive Hope Street area.

The conference theme, ‘Family Matters – making decisions with and for others’ has enabled us to assemble a diverse programme of topical issues.

Delivering plenary lectures we will have:

  • Alex Ruck Keene, leading barrister in the field of mental capacity, giving a timely commentary on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and their likely replacement - Liberty Protection Safeguards;
  • Dr Paul Baines, Paediatric Intensivist and Clinical Ethics Lead for Alder Hey Foundation Trust addressing the perennial ethical challenges of making decisions with children on the cusp of adulthood;
  • Dr Leah McLaughlin, Principal Investigator for the ‘Organ Donation Study’, presenting preliminary findings of a major project investigating families’ experiences of the Welsh model of deemed consent to organ donation;
  • A joint presentation by Prof Richard Huxtable and Prof Jenny Kitzinger (academics with extensive research experience in end of life decision-making), considering the positioning of the family in decision-making for vegetative or minimally conscious patients - an area in which case law and professional guidance continues to develop.

Seminars in the early afternoon facilitated by local experts will allow delegates to discuss in more detail topics addressed in the plenaries and other areas such as safeguarding, critical care, HIV medicine, organ donation and clinically assisted nutrition and hydration.

Do please join us for what we anticipate will be a fascinating day of interest to delegates from a broad range of backgrounds who share an interest in clinical ethics.
