NHS Constitution reform to include new end of life care commitments

Revisions to the NHS Constitution may include measures allowing health trusts which fail to inform patients and their families about end of life treatment plans, to be sued and doctors who ignore the wishes of patients’ and families to be struck off. The move follows reports that some patients were being placed on the Liverpool Care Pathway without the knowledge or consent of either themselves or their families. The Pathway is intended to improve the quality of end of life care for terminally ill patients.
